Our masks take space in a pandemic similar to covid, but one that has extended hundreds of years. They come together to emphasize the relationship between connection and containment through time. Originally society was one unit, as solid as a cube (hence the masks’ shape when they come together). The pandemic created a six-foot divide that separated the two masks by a diagonal line cut into the cube. It contained the two people to be alone by themselves, but then we reconnected them with elastic. The mask is an interactive display of different folding techniques, where we worked towards the goal to have a balance of movement and unity between our two facing sides.
When two people try to come together, in this case, just two strangers pleading for connection, the jagged texture that was created from the pandemic prevents them from ever fitting the same again. The visible chipboard represents how much of a guard a person has let down, how they have chipped away at the layers just to still be contained. Our sense was touch and we wanted to show this through the texture we created, but then we emphasized it by making the mask without eyeholes so they would have to rely on only touch. I think our concept was strong, but I don’t think it was translated as well as some of my other projects.
